Malioboro Literary Eve Enlivens Yogya 11 April 2011 13:15:17
Yogya, Jogjatrip.com – Last Saturday’s (4/9) Malioboro Literary Eve was a tribute to Chairil Anwar, a poet of the 1945 generation. Taking place in front of Gedung Agung, many people came to see the event, which has been held four times, once a month, by the Paguyuban Sastrawan Mataram (Mataram Poet Society).
The poem recital was performed in a unique way, for instance, when Udik Suprianto, Wahyono Giri, Bambang K.S.R., Gatot Electone got on stage combining W.S. Rendra’s Sebatang Lisong with dangdut music. People passing by could not resist looking at them. The audience laughed and looked enjoying the show very much when a little street kid stepped up to dance with funny gestures. Coordinator Sigit Sugito said to Jogjatrip.com, "I want to bring Malioboro back to the 1970s, when many artists produced their literary works here.”
Beside Jogjanese artists, two tourists from Purworejo who happened to be there took their time to give a performance. There were Sri Rahayu and Ita Damayanti. "I happen to be in Yogya and get interested by the show. So, I read the poem,” said Sri Rahayu.
Lik Suyanto, a senior local artist, got on the stage to read a Chairil Anwar with a guitar accompaniment by Doni, who had read his own musical poetries before. The Malioboro Literary Eve featured also Tantra Theatre whose members were street kids. They played music and read social-criticism poems. Another work of Chairil Anwar, Diponegoro, was rendered by Wieka Mahendra and Rina from Bidadari Laut Theater.
Despite the drizzle, the audience did not move away. They sat on the ground or stood around the stage. “Anytime they make a literary performance here, I will come,” said Ida who came with her three fellows. For her, who is a student in one of private universities in the city, Malioboro Literary Eve needs to be preserved.***(Teguh R. Asmara)
